What Is PCOS And How Do We Treat It?

September is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Awareness (PCOS) Month and we wanted to give some space to this sickness that many women suffer from. Even though it is a stressful thing to go through, the exact cause of PCOS is unknown but it’s still one of the most common hormone problems for women.

So What Exactly Is PCOS?

It’s when the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens - male sex hormones that are usually present in women only in small amounts. And in these cases where women aren’t producing enough necessary hormones for ovulation, the ovaries start to develop small cysts. It tends to be incredibly painful, making menstrual cycles unbearable for some.

Having PCOS can be painful for many. But the symptoms can expand from there. Some women experience:

  • missed periods, irregular periods, or very light periods

  • development of cysts on the ovaries

  • excess body hair, including the chest, stomach, and back

  • weight gain, especially around the abdomen

  • acne or oily skin

  • infertility
